Stump Grinding in Townsville
Stumps taken out below the surface
A removal is not finished while there is still a stump in the lawn. We can grind any stump, whether we took the tree out or someone else did.

The job is not finished with a stump in the lawn
A stump left in the ground is a trip hazard, a mower killer, a termite invitation and, with a lot of our local species, the start of a thicket of suckers you will be fighting for years.
We grind stumps out below the surface so the ground can be used again. Turf over it, pave over it, put a garden bed on it or replant. The chips from the grind get raked back in as backfill, or taken away if you would rather start with clean soil.
How deep and how wide
Standard is around 250 to 300mm below the surrounding surface, which is enough for turf, topsoil and most garden beds. If you are paving, pouring a slab or putting a footing anywhere near it, tell us and we will go deeper and chase the main laterals as well.
The grind is always a bit wider than the stump looks. Buttress roots flare out below the surface, and leaving them means the ground keeps sinking as they rot down over the next few years.
Before we turn up
- Mark any irrigation, sprinklers, garden lighting or dog fence wire near the stump
- Let us know about services: water, gas, power, comms and any old pipe runs
- Clear pots, ornaments and furniture from a couple of metres around it
- If access is through a gate, measure it and tell us the width
Any stump, not just ours
We are happy to grind stumps left behind by someone else, including old ones that have been sitting for years. Send a photo with something for scale and we can usually price it without coming out.

Standard grind below the surrounding surface. Deeper on request for paving and footings.
Backfilled and raked
Chips raked back in as backfill, or removed if you want clean soil to start with.

Questions
Asked and answered
If yours is not here, ring us. We would rather talk it through than have you guessing at it.
How deep do you grind?
Around 250 to 300mm below the surrounding surface as standard, which suits turf, topsoil and garden beds. If you are paving or pouring, tell us and we will go deeper and chase the laterals.
Can I plant a new tree in the same spot?
Not straight into the grindings. Wood chip in the hole ties up nitrogen as it breaks down. Either take the chips out and backfill with soil, or plant a metre or so off the old centre.
Will the ground sink later?
Not if enough of the buttress roots have been taken out. That is why we grind wider than the stump looks. Leave those and the ground keeps settling for years as they rot.
Do you grind stumps you did not create?
Yes, including old ones. Send a photo with something in it for scale and we can usually price it without a site visit.
