Tree Pruning in Townsville
Pruning to the standard, not to the fence line
We know trees, and we know pruning. Where possible we work to meet AS 4373 to 2007, Pruning of Amenity Trees.

Pruned to AS 4373, not to whatever fits
Pruning is where most tree work goes wrong. Top or lop a tree and it throws out weak regrowth attached to nothing but the wound. Three or four wet seasons later it is more dangerous than the tree you started with.
Where possible we work to meet AS 4373 to 2007, Pruning of Amenity Trees. The cut lands at the branch collar, live crown removal stays within what the tree can carry, and every cut has a reason behind it.
The work we do
- Crown reduction. Bringing the overall height and spread in while keeping a natural shape and a functioning crown
- Crown thinning. Selective removal through the canopy to let wind and light through without changing the outline
- Canopy reduction. Taking weight off long or overextended limbs
- Uplifting. Raising the lower canopy for clearance over driveways, paths, roofs, signage and vehicles
- Deadwooding. Removing dead and hanging material before the wet
- Cabling and bracing. Where a tree is worth keeping but a union needs support, we install hardware rather than remove the limb
When to prune in North Queensland
The honest answer is before the wet, not during it. A crown that has been thinned and deadwooded ahead of the season carries far less sail area and far less loose material, which is what actually ends up on your roof. Leave it until a cyclone watch is announced and you will be in a queue behind everyone else who left it.
Flowering and fruiting species have their own timing, and some of our natives respond badly to heavy work at the wrong point in the year. Ask when we quote and we will tell you the right window for that species.
What we will not do
We do not top trees, and we will not take a crown back past the point the tree can recover from just because a number was thrown at us over the phone. If what you want is not good for the tree, we will tell you and offer the alternative.
On the tools
What the job looks like
Crown work from the harness or the platform, whichever the tree and the site call for.

Questions
Asked and answered
If yours is not here, ring us. We would rather talk it through than have you guessing at it.
What is the difference between pruning and lopping?
Pruning removes specific branches at specific points for a stated reason. Lopping cuts a tree back to a size without regard to where the cut lands. Lopping produces weak regrowth off a wound and leaves you with a more dangerous tree in a few years.
How much can you take off a tree?
As a general rule, no more than about a quarter of the live crown in one go, and less on a stressed or mature tree. If someone quotes you on taking half a tree off, ask them what the standard says about it.
Will pruning fix my view?
Sometimes, and usually not as much as people hope. We can often improve a view with thinning and selective limb removal without wrecking the tree. We will tell you honestly what is achievable before you book it.
When should I prune before cyclone season?
Get it done well before the season rather than during it. Once a watch is announced everyone rings at once, and the trees that get done are the ones that were booked in months earlier.
